FORENSIC & ARCHIVAL AUDIO RESTORATION
Forensic Audio Restoration
The process of enhancing audio for analysis and evaluation that can be used as admissible evidence in a court of law or other official needs. Typically is focused on the voices present in the recording. If preparing for a court of law, the audio engineer is careful to not know the case, nor pay attention to any words said in the audio. The clarity of the speech is paramount, yet the audio engineer is mainly focused on the problems with the audio, not the meaning of the words present.
Using different forms of processing, audio can be improved to:
Make speech more intelligible
Clean up previous generations of audio (reel-to-reel, cassette, cylinder)
Remove background noise
Analyze harmonic content for identification of sources
Audio Archival Restoration
Restoring audio for archival/re-release purposes involves transferring audio from the original source to digital and then using tools to analyze and clean up the audio. Removing noise, clicks/pops, and hum can go a long way in making the music or speech clearer and more enjoyable.
Currently, I am able to restore audio from the following source material:
- CD/Digital
- Cassette
- Vinyl (33 1/3, 45, 78)
- 1/4” Reel to Reel (7.5 ips/15ips)
- 1/2” Reel to Reel (7.5 ips/15ips/30ips)
